Vehicle Registration

All vehicles registered in Texas for the first time are subject to proof of liability insurance. All vehicles currently registered in Texas may also need to provide proof of insurance to renew registration if the automatic verification via TXDMV's statewide database indicates that verificiation is required. Effective January 1, 2011 Texas' minimum standards for liability coverage are 30 / 60 / 25. Per the TX Department of Motor Vehicles, most current auto insurance policies automatically cover the new amounts until the policy is renewed. Please contact your insurance provider directly if you have any questions about your current coverage amounts.

If you are new to Texas and have liability coverage from another state that meets this minimum, be sure to submit the declarations page from your policy that details your specific liability coverage. Research vehicle insurance at the Texas Department of Insurance web site. If you are new to Texas you can read more about the requirements and fees for new registration here.

Recent legislative changes impacting vehicle registaration renewal fees state wide go into effect soon! Find out more by clicking here. If you are unsure of your renewal fee or have not received your renewal notice that indicates how much you are being charged to renew, please call 854-9473 with your license plate number and we can look up the fee for you.

Effective September 1, 2011, NEW (simplified) REGISTRATION RENEWAL FEES APPLY

$64.25 = ALL Passenger Vehicles and Light Trucks weighing up to 6,000 pounds ($50.75 registration + $13.50 local fees)

$58.50 =ALL Trailers up to 6,000 pounds ($45.00 registration + $13.50 local fees)

Prior to September 1, 2011 there were over 1,600 different registration fees based on weight for vehicles over 6,000 pounds. Those 1,600 fees have now been simplified into the following seven.

$ 67.50 = Vehicles weighing 6,001-10,000 pounds ($54 registration + $13.50 local fees)

Request a Registration Renewal Form
A current renewal form is REQUIRED to renew at a neighborhood HEB grocery store or the City of Jonestown. Current is defined as: issued for a vehicle in Travis County --AND-- dated for expiration this month or next month.

All other methods (telephone, online, by mail or in person at a tax office location) do not require a renewal form. However, please be prepared with your proof of insurance and the vehicle's license plate or VIN number regardless of which payment method you choose.

GO GREEN! Sign up for an e-reminder from TxDMV! You'll get your vehicle registration renewal reminder via email.

You may request a duplicate registration renewal form if you live in Travis County and already display current Texas license plates. The request must be made before the end of the second week in the month the renewal expires. If it is too late to order a duplicate renewal, you may simply mail in the renewal fee (from chart above) with the license plate number or vehicle identification number (VIN) and proof of insurance to Travis County Tax Office / P. O. Box 149326 / Austin, TX 78714-9326. If sending a check, make it payable to the Travis County Tax Office. You may renew a current registration (meaning this month or next month) online at Texas.gov which requires a credit card (additional fee applies). You may renew by telephone, regardless of the registration expiration month, with a credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express - additional $3 fee applies) by calling us at (512) 854-9473. You may also renew in person at any of our 5 office locations (four offices offer drive through service for renewals) and pay for your renewal with cash, money order, cashier's check, personal check (valid current photo ID required) or credit card ($3 fee applies). When you renew in person, the sticker and registration receipt you need will be provided on the spot.

If the message NEW PLATES REQUIRED appears on your renewal notice, you can renew your registration by mail, online, by phone or in person at any Travis County Tax office location. There is no additional fee if new plates are required. If you renew by mail, online or by phone, your new plates will simply be mailed to you with your new registration sticker.

Please be advised that new plates are NOT available at area HEB locations or at the Jonestown office as those locations DO NOT have any license plates in stock.

The Federal Privacy Protection Act (18 U.S.C. 2721) places certain restrictions on the release of personal information. To comply with this legislation, duplicate renewals may only be released to the vehicle owner of record contained in the files maintained by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Contact the Tax Office at (512) 854-9473 for details on how we can accommodate customers' needs in light of this federal amendment.

If you do not yet have Texas plates for your vehicle, we have information available here to help you obtain them.
