| All
vehicles registered in Texas for the first time are subject to proof of
liability insurance. All vehicles currently registered in Texas may also
need to provide proof of insurance to renew registration if the automatic
verification via TXDMV's statewide database indicates that verificiation
is required. Texas' minimum standards for liability coverage are 25 /
50 / 25 as of April 1. 2008. If you are new to Texas and have liability
coverage from another state that meets this minimum, be sure to submit
the declarations page from your policy that details your specific liability
coverage. Research vehicle insurance at the Texas
Department of Insurance web site. If you are new to Texas you can
read more about the requirements and fees for new registration here.

Request a Registration Renewal Form
A current renewal form is REQUIRED to renew at a neighborhood HEB grocery
store or the City of Jonestown. Current is defined as: issued for a vehicle
in Travis County --AND-- dated for expiration this month or next month.
All other methods (telephone, online, by mail or in
person at a tax office location) do not require a renewal form. However,
please be prepared with your proof of insurance and the vehicle's license
plate or VIN number regardless of which payment method you choose.
You may request a duplicate registration renewal form
if you live in Travis County and already display current Texas license
plates. The request must be made before the end of the second
week in the month the renewal expires. If it is too late to order
a duplicate renewal, you may simply mail in the renewal fee (from chart
above) with the license plate number or vehicle identification number
(VIN) and proof of insurance to Travis County Tax Office / P. O. Box 149326
/ Austin, TX 78714-9326. If sending a check, make it payable to Nelda
Wells Spears. You may renew a current registration (meaning this month
or next month) online at Texas Online
which requires a credit card (additional fee applies). You may renew by
telephone any time, regardless of the expiration month, with a credit
card (Discover, VISA, MasterCard or American Express, $3 fee applies)
at 512-854-9473. You may also renew in person at any of our 5 office locations
(four offices offer drive through service for renewals) and pay for your
renewal with cash, money order, cashier's check, personal check (valid
current photo ID required) or credit card ($3 fee applies). When you renew
in person, the sticker and registration receipt you need will be provided
on the spot.
The Federal Privacy
Protection Act (18 U.S.C. 2721) places certain restrictions on the
release of personal information. To comply with this legislation, duplicate
renewals may only be released to the vehicle owner of record contained
in the files maintained by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Contact the Tax Office at (512) 854-9473 for details of how we can accommodate
customers' needs in light of this federal amendment.
If you do not yet have Texas plates for your vehicle,
we have information available on this site to help you obtain
them.
